Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. In her early years she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford was interested in the field of acting during her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place suitable for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application she was eventually accepted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He was later to play frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate would also frequently work in the theatre, and later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate started to get noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
